In the artworks by Matthias Holz you will not get rid of the impression that you have landed in the dream world of an animal. In surreal scenes appear hybrids, chimeras, floating animals and elements that are reminiscent of the fantasies of Salvador Dalí. These strange creatures seem to have increased from distant lands of fairy tales and fables.
But at second glance, the surreal dreams solve a contradiction, because there is always the deep feeling that there's more behind it all: religion, allusions to sexuality, the loss of childhood and naivety – we become ourself the observer of our long lost Garden of Eden, browsing through the pages of a children’s book as a reminiscence of what we once had.
He currently lives and works in Hamburg.
